Battle Wounds is a short story set in the Honor and Duty series universe.
Captain Ashlyn Shaw has faced the realities of war. Death is her constant companion, an unwelcome one. After losing four of her company in an ambush that never should have happened, she is asked to accept a special mission. Command suspects a traitor has infiltrated their ranks and they want Ash and others to act as bait in an attempt to draw them out.
Worse, at least as far as Ash is concerned, FleetCom is focusing on only one possible explanation for the ambush. That narrow view could lead to even more deaths before those responsible for betraying Fuercon are identified. All Ashlyn can do is keep her eyes and ears open and pray the Marines onboard the Dresden are as dedicated to keeping Fuercon safe as are the Devil Dogs.
And God help the traitor should Ashlyn discover their identity. No one betrays home and Corps and gets away with it.

Nicely written back-story short that is the beginning of one of the threads found in the main story-line of the novels - that is, that there is a traitor somewhere in the Fuercon government or military out there selling op mission secrets to the Callusian enemy. Ash is again in top form, leading her men and women in the fight to find out who is selling the Fuerconese down the proverbial creek. I hope the author has more shorts in the works about Ashlyn and her exploits before the events in the novels - absolutely loving the ones so far :)Product details

I obtained this story through the Unlimited program.
The first time we met Captain Shaw, she is in a prison cell, where she has resided for the past two years. While we are given bits and pieces of the circumstances and persons that brought her to that place, I believe this is the biggest chunk of her backstory we've seen so far.
Fresh from one disastrous encounter with the bad guys, which put her in the hospital, Captain Ashlyn Shaw slips her medical watchdogs to show up at the funeral of a gritty little corporal who closed an airtight door from the other side so that the Devil Dogs trapped under equipment might have a few more hours in which to be rescued. She is joined at the cemetery by her senior NCO, also a medical escapee. Before they can return to the hospital, they are met by a messenger.
Another mission awaits, and they are the bait, which must wiggle convincingly in order to attract the fish.
If you've ever been fishing, you know that regardless of whatever else happens, it's not going to be a nice day for the bait.

A short story with a mystery and a battle. It's a nice tidbit while fans wait for more, but there's enough here that those who haven't read the novels can dive right in.
Good story. Not long enough. When will we get a new book?
I enjoyed this book, bit not as much as the first two. Worth the price of an eBook.
Lately I've been buying a whole lot more indies. It feels like I get more bang for my buck then if I went thru traditional sources. Pun intended.
This short is just a taste of the amazing adventure that waits. I grew up on 70s, 80s and 90s sci fi because of my dad, so if you love anything from those eras, get these books.
